Struck from dies of fine style
Lot 1528
CYRENAICA. Cyrene. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. 'Dupondius' (Bronze, 24 mm, 10.43 g, 11 h), Rome, for use in Cyrenaica, 169/70. Μ ΑΥΡΗΛ ΑΝΤⲰΝЄΙΝΟC CЄΒ Radiate and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΔΗΜΑΡΧΙΚ ЄΞΟΥC•ΚΔ• Bearded head of Zeus-Ammon to right, with ram's horn over his ear. BMC 186 ('Caesarea'). RPC IV.1 online 6849. Sydenham, Caesarea, 342. Very rare. An unusually well preserved example of this interesting issue struck from dies of fine style. A few spots of corrosion and with light cleaning scratches on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

The dies for this issue were clearly made in Rome, but whether the coins were also struck there or the dies shipped to Cyrene for local use is unclear.
